Why do most people fail in CA exams?

We all know the pass percentages of CA exams. Why is it that so many people fail to clear the exams in their first attempt? I bring to you a series of articles discussing the reasons. Read on...

This is my personal opinion, built on the numerous CA aspirants I have met and observed over the last so many years.

I feel that students do not fail in the examinations; they fail in the approach. They fail the very moment the approach shifts from LEARNING to CLEARING THE EXAMS. I have always maintained that a CA student can be successful in exams only when he stops running after marks. We have all seen the movie 3 Idiots but haven't really put the learnings into practice. CA is not a course that is all about marks. You need conceptual clarity to become a good CA. Have you ever analyzed the reasons of failing in exams? If you haven't, let me help you a bit in this:

  1. Lack of discipline: Clearing CA is not a joke, and all those who feel that clearing CA is as easy as passing your board exams - please subscribe to my blog asap for some reality check. One of the major reasons for failing in exams is lack of self-control. When a CA student cannot concentrate or sit away from his mobile phone even for 5 minutes, how will he be able to digest the vast syllabus of the course? CA demands a professional approach and complete dedication. CA is considered one of the toughest courses in the world for a reason, and it is only imperative that you respect that.

  2. Faulty or no strategy: Most students either do not have a concrete strategy for studying and facing the exams, or the strategy is lacking on many grounds. It is important that you plan your studies well. You should have enough time for revision, mock tests and doubt clearing sessions earmarked within your study plan.

  3. Coaching classes and YouTube videos: Believe it or not, the coaching institutes and online videos have a lot of bearing on the level of conceptual clarity you possess. It is true that for many, coaching classes are indispensable. But care should be taken to not rely on them completely because they are not going to appear for you in the exams. You need to develop you own methodologies, thinking, and practice of solving questions.

  4. Mental health: Keeping a positive frame of mind is indispensable - both during the preparation stage and more so during the exams. The problem is a lot of people start losing hope as the D-day approaches. This is like losing the battle even before fighting it. Read my post on how to improve mental health here.

The most important thing is to learn from experiences - be it your own or those of your friends or seniors. And obviously, learn from failures. See what's been lacking in your preparations - analyze it on a per-subject basis.
