Does the number of attempts really matter in CA?

99% of the CA students believe that the number of attempts matters a lot in Chartered Accountancy. In this post, I am attempting to deep dive and analyze what's the real truth. Read on...

It is all not over if God forbid, you need another attempt to realize your dreams of becoming a Chartered Accountant. I know you would not want to believe me on reading this. But let me give you a more practical perspective - the Placements.

Shortlists & Offers - Do attempts matter?

Yes, the best offers are a bit skewed towards Rankholders and those qualifying in the first attempt. But that does not mean it is the end of the road for all the others. In the Campus Interviews, companies sort your CVs on the basis of the number of attempts. I have seen people with even 3 attempts getting good shortlists. But it is not totally untrue that people are rejected on the basis of number of attempts. So there is some truth when people say that the number of attempts does matter.

Let's go a bit further... What is the requirement for companies coming for Campus Placements?

The Big Fours prefer Rankholders and those passing in the first attempt. But they do keep their doors open even for people requiring 3 attempts. If we talk about the corporates, most companies look for candidates with a maximum of 2 attempts.

Bottomline - Tough first job

So what is the bottomline from whatever we have analyzed till now? The road is definitely not easy for those with multiple attempts. But this is only for the first job. You may not land your dream job in companies like HUL or ITC, but you will definitely get into a decent job. Our economy is at such a position today, that there is always going to be a healthy demand for CAs. Even post-Covid, I don't think this would change.

Negligible impact from the second job onwards

From the second job onwards, your experience and knowledge levels will count. Your overall profile will hold more relevance over the number of attempts. The key is to perform well in your first job. You never know, a person with multiple attempts might get a promotion before someone clearing in the first shot - merely on the basis of performance and commitment.

The Summary

So the summary of the analysis is ---> The number of attempts matter only as long as the Campus Placements. Yes, there are chances you may not land up in your dream job. But at the young age of 25 (let's assume), do you really want to land up straight into your dream job? Isn't this is the time to explore and try out something fancy? Be rest assured that the spectre of the count of attempts will not come back to haunt you from your second job onwards, provided you build a good track record and a strong profile in your first job.

Hope this analysis helps ease down some concerns. The best part is obviously clearing the exams in the first shot. Do you watch the same web series twice? No, right? Then why do you want to study the same thing twice? Study hard, study well, and clear the exams in the first attempt!

More strength to your preparation...

Cheers:)
